What "flat 50% off", "up to 70% off" and "sale price" really mean

Flat 50% off

"Flat" means every item in the sale gets the same discount. With flat 50% off, each one is half its "was" price.

• A suit with a "was" price of Rs 4,990 costs Rs 2,495.
• A dupatta with a "was" price of Rs 1,800 costs Rs 900.

Flat 50% off covers the items in the sale, which is not always the whole shop. New arrivals may not be included. Check that the item you want shows the sale price before you add it to your cart.

Up to 70% off

"Up to" tells you the biggest discount in the sale. Some items get it. Many get less. Here is how three items in an "up to 70% off" sale could look:

• Item A, was Rs 6,000, 70% off: you pay Rs 1,800.
• Item B, was Rs 5,000, 30% off: you pay Rs 3,500.
• Item C, was Rs 4,000, 20% off: you pay Rs 3,200.

All three are in the same sale, but only one is at 70%. On our site today, 11,771 of 349,782 marked-down items are at 70% off or more, and the typical one is 30% off.

Sale price and "was" price

The sale price is what you pay now. The "was" price, the one with a line through it, is set by the brand. The "% off" is worked out from that "was" price.

That does not always tell you how much cheaper the item is than last week. On 8 Oct 2026 we saw Engine cut the price of 1,265 items at once. Most of the labels said 70% off. Compared with the price just before the sale started, the typical item was 40% cheaper.

Still a good saving, just not 70% below its price before the sale. To see your real saving, compare the sale price with what the item cost before the sale, not only with the "was" price.

Extra 10% off, on top of the sale

Two discounts one after the other do not simply add up. Each one is taken from the price left after the first.

• Was Rs 4,000, 30% off: Rs 2,800.
• Extra 10% off Rs 2,800: Rs 2,520.
• In total you save Rs 1,480, which is 37% off, not 40%.

Starting from Rs 999

This is the price of the cheapest item in the sale. A few items may be at that price. The one you like may cost more.

Sale on selected items

Only some items are in the sale. The banner may show the biggest discount, but the item you want may not be included at all. Look for the sale price on the item itself.

Final sale

A final sale item usually cannot be exchanged or returned. Before you buy, check the size chart and the brand's exchange policy, because a cheaper price is no saving if it does not fit.
